A Novel by Charles E. Merkel II

Front CoverCharles Merkel got the idea for The Girl in the Picture several decades ago when he–himself a Vietnam veteran–heard several astounding accounts of a soldier’s luck in the war going from one extreme to the other.

Charlie, eighteen years of age most of his tour, knew that somewhere between a third to forty percent of those who served in that political quagmire of a war had been teenagers for at least for part of their tour. The unfortunate soldier’s story reminded him of just how difficult times could be for a youngster in a torridly uncomfortable climate, facing a terrifyingly destructive enemy while enduring endless backbreaking hours and a decaying situation back home.

Homesick, love-starved, and depressed, these kids a year or two removed from high school served exceedingly well, yet many times their lack of seasoning prompted some of them to embark on ill-advised adventures and schemes. Charlie felt a different type of war story needed to be told: one of a burning need for self-esteem; waning judgment; and decisions with life or death consequences.

The Girl in the Picture is based on actual events that Charlie lived, witnessed, or heard first-hand. Though the book is a novel, very little in it is fictitious and it is a definite eye-opener.
